Major League Baseball Players and Volunteers of America Help Improve Lives of At-Risk and Disadvantaged Children

Through the Major League Baseball Players Trust charitable foundation, Major League baseball players today presented Volunteers of America with grants to help at-risk and disadvantaged children and youth. Volunteers of America's local offices in North and South Carolina, North and South Dakota, Northern New England, Kentucky, Tennessee and Oklahoma each received a grant of $10,000 to fund programs targeting at- risk and disadvantaged children and youth. The award was presented during Volunteers of America's national conference in Washington, D.C., June 18-22.

A portion of the proceeds from sales of the All-American Slam(R) and savory Hickory Burger Combo will go to the Mike Bush Fantasy Baseball Camp, an organization that gives hearing-impaired children an opportunity to practice their baseball skills at the camp. MLB.com, the official website of Major League Baseball, will offer the only live video broadcast of tomorrow's San Diego Padres vs. Detroit Tigers game directly from Comerica Park in Detroit on MLB.TV at 1:05 EDT. This is the first time San Diego has visited Detroit since the 1984 World Series match-up. San Diego's Woody Williams (2-4) is expected to go against Detroit's Jeremy Bonderman (7-4). The exclusive broadcast is being produced by MLB.com's Mike Siano, with former Major Leaguer and MLB.com's own Billy Sample providing the play-by-play on MLB.TV.

ConAgra Foods and Charlotte Knights team up to help feed children better

Beginning today, every run the Knights score will do more than help them win games: Each run will help feed hungry children. As part of ConAgra Foods’ sponsorship of Minor League Baseball this summer, the Charlotte Knights, Durham Bulls and Nashville Sounds will participate in the inaugural ConAgra Foods Feeding Children Better Challenge. For every run the three teams score this season, ConAgra Foods is making a $15 cash donation to America's Second Harvest – The Nation’s Food Bank Network. This donation will provide a meal for 15 hungry children ($1 = one meal).  By season’s end, up to $10,000 per market will be donated to Kids Cafes in Charlotte, Nashville, Tenn. and Raleigh-Durham, N.C. on behalf of the Knights, Bulls and Sounds.

Randy and Kyle Drone are swinging from the heels. The father-son duo has yet to hit the ball out of the park, but the count is definitely in their favor. Three years ago the Drones founded Dinger Bats with the hope of getting a share of the wooden bat market. They haven't achieved the status of Louisville Slugger or Adirondack, but the Drones and Dinger have reached the big leagues. Brad Wilkerson, the Washington Nationals' centerfielder, and Jamey Carroll, the Nationals' second baseman, both use Dinger bats. Carroll, an Evansville, Ind., native, played for the Aces.

Crawford Architects has moved on after losing its bid to design the Sprint Center, winning a big job in Australia, adding staff and planning a new headquarters. The firm, which has offices in Kansas City and in Sydney, Australia, recently announced the hiring of six employees locally. Among its bigger projects are the $300 million Branson Landing mixed-use redevelopment in Branson and a $102 million convention center planned for Darwin, Australia.
